The escalating threat of e-Crime facing Welsh business will be placed under the spotlight at a high-level gathering of UK security experts in Newport, South Wales, to be staged next month.

Wales has taken an international lead in tackling the problem by establishing the e-Crime Wales Partnership Initiative which includes the Welsh Assembly Government, the four Welsh police forces, HSBC Bank and BT.

The Wales E-Crime Summit 2007 will feature a keynote address from Andrew Davies, Minister for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks at the Welsh Assembly Government, as well as addresses by senior police officers and representatives of blue-chip businesses eBay, HSBC and BT to some 300 delegates.

Mr Davies said, "Unfortunately it's a truism of the 21st century that more criminals now use computers than crowbars. Over half of all theft and fraud involves computers and mobile phones - with business being the most obvious and frequently abused target.

"This is why the issue of E-Crime is no longer 'special'. It has to be addressed as mainstream and has to be firmly on top of every organisation's agenda for preventative action."

Figures compiled by the DTI Information Security Breach team show that two thirds of all UK organisations are victims of malicious e-crime attacks - and that the average cost per e-crime incident ranges from £10,000 to £120,000.

The first Wales e-Crime Wales Summit was held in Cardiff in February 2005. The outcome was a mandate to produce a manifesto and action plan.

The second summit took place in Llangollen at the end of January 2006. International experts informed over 200 delegates about the threats we all face from computer crime. The event also launched the new Assembly Government-led Action Plan to tackle the problem.

Following the success of the previous two e-Crime Wales summits, the 2007 summit will take place at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport on March 2nd 2007.

Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Corcoran, of North Wales Police, Chair of the e-Crime Steering Group, said, "We're greatly encouraged by the support we've received for this initiative from both the public and private sectors.

"It is essential that the individual businesses are equipped with the knowledge and access to advice that will enable them to use the Internet profitably and safely."

Representatives of businesses and organisations in Wales are being urged to secure a place at what will be one of the most important events on the Welsh business calendar this year.

Topics to be examined at the 2007 summit include:

* The enemy within - how to protect your company from both its employees and external threats.
* Safeguarding your business - who is responsible for keeping you and your company safe?
* Who can help? - The role of the Welsh Assembly Government and the Police Force in Wales in implementing the e-Crime Action Plan.

Additionally there will be seminar sessions, examining issues such as IT policy and risk management.
