SmoothWall Adds New ‘Baby’ UTMs to Existing Security Suite

Yorkshire-based security vendors SmoothWall have this month added two UTM hardware appliances to their steadily growing security suite. Their new 100 and 300 Series UTMs are designed to give small and medium sized businesses the power and protection of a UTM solution, without the expensive price tag.

Although many people still associate the name SmoothWall with Network Firewalls and Open Source, in the last few years, the company has morphed itself into a leading security vendor, chiefly due to the success of their Guardian Web Filter (one of the first to use intelligent content analysis instead of a URL-blocklist based approach).

In 2007 they launched their first hardware-based UTM appliance (the UTM-1000) and with the arrival of these new ‘baby’ UTM’s, SmoothWall now has a full ‘family’ of hardware appliances to suit a range of network sizes and user counts.

SmoothWall Product Manager Tom Newton says affordable ‘all-in-one’ security is the ideal solution for SMBs, non-profits and educational institutions with smaller networks (<500 users) and limited resources who can’t risk compromising their protection:

"Sharp growth in remote working and web-based technologies mean network managers in the small to mid-sized business (SMB) sector are facing a constant battle to provide up-to-the-minute security on a realistic budget. They need robust, affordable and easy to manage solutions that do exactly what they say on the tin.”

SmoothWall’s channel partners are keen to pass the benefits of the new appliances onto their customers. Marshall Lucas, CTO at ESI Technology in Indianapolis said: "To the SMB market, the name SmoothWall has always been synonymous with ‘best value’ and we see these ‘affordable’ UTMs as a much-needed lifeline for our smaller customers without sacrificing features or functions. We can now offer a very robust, secure and modular firewall solution to our clients that have smaller budgets”.

With prices starting at just over £1000, SmoothWall’s new ‘bantam weight’ boxes offer robust firewalling combined with IDS, anti-virus and email security on high performance hardware (built to handle significant volumes of VPN traffic). Other add-on features include advanced web filtering (UTMs with fully featured web filters are rare), anti-spam and bandwidth management.
