Pointsec(R) for Pocket PC Receives FIPS 140-2 Security Certification

Pointsec Mobile Technologies, provider of mobile enterprise security, announced that the cryptographic module used in Pointsec for Pocket PC has received FIPS 140-2 Certificate #441 from the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). Pointsec for Pocket PC now becomes the first and only data encryption solution to achieve FIPS 140-2 for the Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 platform.
Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 specifies the necessary security requirements of cryptographic technology used within U.S. government agencies' IT infrastructures. The standard, set by a working group within NIST and approved by the agency, is the newest and most rigorous set by NIST. It supercedes FIPS 140-1, which until recently was the benchmark used by many governmental and private organizations to select strong encryption technology for their data systems.
Pointsec for Pocket PC is a premier security product for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) powered by the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system. Pointsec for Pocket PC offers automatic, real-time encryption of all data on a user's PDA, including data created using Microsoft Outlook E-mail, Notes, Pocket Word and more. Pointsec for Pocket PC also automatically secures data stored on removable media such as MicroDrives, MultiMedia Cards (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) cards and Compact Flash (CF) cards, thus ensuring that all forms of personal and enterprise data will be protected.
"FIPS 140-2 redefines and improves on the widely held FIPS 140-1 standard which was used for years by numerous standards bodies and testing organizations both within and outside the U.S.," said Peter Larsson, CEO of Pointsec Mobile Technologies. "Being the first mobile encryption product to satisfy the requirements of FIPS 140-2 with the latest version of the operating system is further proof of Pointsec's commitment to be at the forefront of international security protection."
In addition to real-time encryption, Pointsec for Pocket PC offers enforceable mandatory access control using a choice of password methods including exclusive PicturePIN(TM) and QuickPIN(TM) authentication technologies. The product automatically encrypts and decrypts data with no noticeable performance degradation; its exceptional usability and dependability ensure a high degree of user satisfaction.
In February of this year Pointsec for PC, the company's security product for desktop PCs, was awarded Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) of the Common Criteria, the most demanding international IT security standard established by many of the world's leading industrialized nations. Pointsec for PC was the world's first provider of a full hard disk encryption solution to receive Common Criteria EAL4. The product achieved FIPS 140-1 certification in 2002. 23.06.2004, Pointsec Mobile Technologies
