Sygate Begins Most Widely Known Security Validation

Sygate Technologies, provider of enterprise endpoint security solutions, announced it has entered the United States federal government's evaluation process for Common Criteria Certification. Sygate's award-winning security product, Sygate Secure Enterprise, will begin evaluation for Assurance Level 3 Augmented status, which extends the evaluation criteria assuring more security validation for Sygate Secure Enterprise. The Common Criteria process was created by the federal government to provide an independent and objective validation that a company's product meets certain levels of quality, reliability and trustworthiness. Sygate's global customers can use this certification as a means of quantifying or measuring the extent to which its product's security has been rigorously assessed in a standard, internationally recognized way.
"Common Criteria certification of Sygate Secure Enterprise adds yet another layer of assurance that our customers can trust when implementing a Sygate solution," said John De Santis, CEO, Sygate Technologies. "Global customers who rely on Sygate to protect their networks by eliminating rogue and compromised devices will, upon completion of the vigorous testing and evaluation of this certification, have added assurance that Sygate delivers the highest quality security protection validated by a respected, third party."
The United States federal government maintains a set of evaluation criteria for judging the security of computer systems. Many of its agencies, and many private-sector companies, will only buy systems that meet specified sets of these evaluation criteria. The U.S. National Information Assurance Acquisition Policy (NSTISSP No. 11) mandates that security products acquired after July 1, 2002 be subject to a standardized evaluation process (i.e., Common Criteria), which provides some assurance that the products perform as advertised. Furthermore, the DoD Directive 8500.2 of February 6, 2003 mandates that if there are validated products available that match an approved U.S. Government protection profile for a particular technology area, then acquisition is restricted to those products or to products submitted for evaluation. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends that all federal agencies give substantial considerations to products that have been evaluated or tested against recommend protection profiles based on Common Criteria.
About Common Criteria
The Common Criteria program is developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and National Security Agency as part of the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) establishing an organizational and technical framework to evaluate the trustworthiness of IT Products and protection profiles. Certification to the Common Criteria EAL3 requires in-depth analysis of product design and development methodology, backed by extensive testing. EAL3 certificates are currently recognized by the following countries: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom. The Common Criteria represents the outcome of efforts to develop criteria for evaluation of IT security that are widely accepted within the international community.
