V-Secure Technologies, Inc., provider of intrusion prevention systems, announced the availability of a newly published white paper titled, "Next-Generation Network Security Requires an Adaptive Approach." According to the Yankee Group Special Report, a proactive approach to applying intrusion prevention features to block attacks is required to solve network security problems. The report highlights that the ability to adapt to network dynamics promises to save IT significant time and resources compared to the constant maintenance of signatures or the manual tuning required of rule-based behavioral systems.

"Adaptive intrusion prevention systems clear the network of unwanted traffic that signature-based systems cannot discover, while preserving valuable bandwidth for business communications," said Eric Ogren, senior analyst with the Yankee Group. "V-Secure is deploying high performance dynamic filtering technology outside the firewalls to intelligently block intruder reconnaissance efforts, malicious code, and denial of service attacks before network resources can be infected."

According to the recently published report, more than 80% of companies connected to the Internet experienced a disruption in business due to a worm or virus in 2003, with 40% of respondents also experiencing at least one denial-of-service (DoS) attack. These attacks occur, even with ubiquitous firewall and intrusion detection deployments. It also indicates that the V-Secure appliance, deployed either outside of the perimeter firewalls or on critical internal network segments, offers protection by blocking network intrusions with no false positives.

In the report, Yankee Group offers its recommendations for intrusion prevention solutions which include:

* Make network intrusion prevention an essential element of your security architecture: deploy network intrusion prevention systems to preserve a healthy network for heightened application availability.

* Focus on behavioral approaches in evaluations: a dynamic model of adapting automatically to changes in behavior has proven to be effective and easy.

* Demand comprehensive reports for audit committees and executive management: Vendors must offer reports and user interfaces that concisely communicate the value of the network IPS.

* Stop throwing good security money into IDS systems: deploying traditional intrusion detection systems for security tasks outside their design invites failure.

"I am delighted that this special Yankee Group report strongly validates our approach towards intrusion prevention", said Izhar Shay, Chairman and CEO of V-Secure. "Using our Adaptive Smart Dynamic Filtering technology, the V-Secure appliance offers the most effective intrusion prevention solution, with minimal deployment efforts and the lowest TCO in the industry."

The new white paper presents the Yankee Group's positioning of intrusion prevention systems within an IT security architecture, the demand for IPS innovation, an evaluation of the current network security technology market, and recommendations for existing and potential IPS buyers.
