Following a successful application for public sales license for anti-spam solutions in China, Barracuda Networks Inc., provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, announced the official launch of the Barracuda Spam Firewall in China. The public sales license, which was granted by China's Ministry of Public Security (PRC) in September, opens the door for rapid business growth for Barracuda Networks in China and other regions of Asia.

Spam continues to pose a tremendous threat to overall network security for businesses in China and accounts for more than 50 percent of all email traffic. Furthermore, the number of email servers that are hijacked and used by spammers continues to increase, gaining the attention of the Chinese government, which has subsequently stepped up security measures to crack down on spam.

In China the Internet security market is regulated by the PRC, which requires that all computer security vendors obtain a sales license before its products can be sold publicly. In addition to complying with all rules for IT security products, anti-spam products must also pass through a separate set of tests conducted by the PRC before a sales license is granted.

"As one of the first international hardware anti-spam companies to obtain a sales license we are anxious to help businesses in China reclaim control of their email," said Peter He, general manager of Barracuda Networks China. "We are confident that businesses in Asia will benefit from the performance, scalability and ease-of-use that thousands of organizations worldwide have found with the Barracuda Spam Firewall."

Barracuda Networks is one of the only anti-spam companies that offer a product that can filter spam and viruses in more than ten languages including Chinese. Additionally, the Barracuda Spam Firewall graphical user interface (GUI) fully supports eight languages including Chinese, Japanese, French, German, and Spanish, making it easy to administer and manage for companies worldwide.

In addition to opening an office in Shanghai in July, Barracuda Networks has already signed on several large distributors in Asia, including Beijing In-GreatTechnology Co Ltd, Netpoleon Solutions Ltd in Singapore and the Philippines, Gateway Computer Resources Ltd in Hong Kong, China Most Co Ltd in Taiwan, IT Secure Ltd in India, and Trans-Innovation Sdn in Malaysia.

About the Barracuda Spam Firewall Family

The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in four models and supports from 1,000 to 25,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defense layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, intention analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. This architecture minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also provides the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.
