Unisys Combats Email Threats with Managed Security Service Powered by MessageLabs

Unisys Corporation, an IT services company and provider of security solutions, and MessageLabs, provider of managed email security services to businesses worldwide, announced an alliance to reduce and minimize email threats to enterprises. Unisys is delivering solutions, powered by MessageLabs and driven by Unisys Managed Security Services expertise, to protect enterprises against spam, Internet viruses and other unwanted email threats and malicious content from around the world.
The Unisys services scan tens of millions of emails originating outside enterprises' networks on a 24x7 basis for viruses, spam, pornography and other undesirable content. They rely on Unisys security experts and a fully scalable global services management infrastructure handling 50 million service events daily for some 200 clients.
One organization already benefiting from the Unisys and MessageLabs alliance is the United Kingdom's Kingston University. Since the managed service went live at Kingston in March 2004, nearly 6.5 million emails have been scanned and more than 450,000 viruses intercepted.
Ian McNeice, Head of Technical Services, ICT Services at Kingston University said, "By working with Unisys and MessageLabs we have been able to free up our internal staff to work on more strategic projects, saving us time and money. The managed email service has been a great success in terms of security and keeping the network up and running. Furthermore, not one email-borne virus has penetrated the network."
The new services represent the continuing expansion of Unisys suite of Managed Security Services. The solutions target large, global companies across all the vertical markets Unisys serves, providing increased protection from both known and unknown viruses and worms and reducing the levels of unwanted Internet traffic, such as spam, that can clog up corporate infrastructures.
The Unisys services also offer a web-based management portal, providing online service statistics and reports as needed - enabling customers to see how the managed service is performing for their business, tracking email activity and addressing any adverse incidents.
Service subscribers can also benefit from Unisys comprehensive expertise in all aspects of managed IT security, capitalizing on Unisys other application security services, such as managed web application firewalls; web content security; and network security, including Intrusion Detection and Prevention, Network Firewall and VPN and Secure Remote Access and subscription services, such as Vulnerability Scanning.
"Internet threats can cause downtime and have significant cost implications," says Lorien Gabel, Global VP of Business Development at MessageLabs. "Enterprises can benefit from the solutions offered by MessageLabs and Unisys in many ways - a managed service can free up in-house IT resources, increase employee productivity and enhance the efficiency and operability of email systems by combating the threats that place businesses at risk. This in turn can improve network utilization levels through reduced email volumes and reduced demand on Internet bandwidth."
According to Bart De Maerteleare, Partner, Security Practice, Unisys Europe/Middle East/India/Africa, "Email is a critical business communication tool. IT resources, sensitive corporate information and even organizational reputations are increasingly exposed to email-borne threats. It is crucial that companies protect themselves. The combination of MessageLabs advanced technology and Unisys proven expertise in managed security services protects enterprises around the clock." 27.10.2004, Unisys Corp.
