Pen-One Announces Biometric Pen Developer’s

Pen-One, Inc., announced its new application development kit for its “Connaitre” fingerprint sensing pen. The software development kit (SDK) includes several simple demonstration or training programs along with actual application software. In addition, the kit provides tools including drivers and code to permit users to develop their own applications.
We recognize that the Connaitre fingerprint sensing pen is a broad security platform with many new applications,” said Scott Bechtel, a spokesman for Pen-One. “We worked closely with Informatica ECS to develop turnkey applications and customizable software tools to support the most popular uses of the new pen. Users can create special customized software using the SDK to meet their own special security needs.”
Bechtel also confirmed that Informatica ECS is available as a development partner if a customer prefers to outsource its system development work. “Informatica ECS is experienced with high security clients in health care, security, and shop floor control,” he added.
The new SDK includes basic application software for authenticating signers of logs and documents. Pen-based computing and system access applications are facilitated. Users have the option of storing templates in a central database or directly on an ID or payment card. Print functions for paper records, transaction logs, and receipts are also included. Tools to customize user forms or even develop new applications are simple and easy to use, incorporating Microsoft’s popular .NET standards.
The SDK costs less than $1500 and includes a Connaitre biometric pen. Version 1.0 will follow the Beta release early next year, and will be available through Pen-One sales representatives, distributors, and Pen-One’s web site.
Pen-One introduced “Connaitre” (named for the French word ‘to know’) at the CARTES and IT Security show November 2 in Paris, France. The new high technology pen scans and compares a fingerprint to confirm the identity of an enrolled signer. The process takes about 400 milliseconds and is completed before the name is signed. The new pen can help stop identity theft and prevent point of sale payment fraud, and retails for about $250.
The Pen-One fingerprint-sensing pen is the idea of inventor Gerald R. Black, who is a co-founder of Pen-One, Inc. “I am very pleased to see my idea unveiled as a real product people will use everyday,” remarked Black. “This software allows my pen to solve a wide variety of security problems. The world will become more secure as people begin using Connaitre.” 05.11.2004, Pen-One, Inc.
